Shopify Product Description SEO: How to Write Descriptions That Rank

By EcomWave Team · April 22, 2026

Product descriptions are the most underestimated SEO asset in most Shopify stores. A 50-word generic description copied from a supplier sheet does nothing for organic rankings. A 200-word unique description targeting the right keywords can put your product on the first page.

Here’s exactly how to write product descriptions that rank.

Why Product Descriptions Matter for SEO

Google’s algorithm ranks pages based on relevance and quality. For product pages, that means:

  1. Relevance: Does your description contain the keywords buyers use?
  2. Uniqueness: Is this content original, or duplicated from another source?
  3. Quality: Does the content help the user understand the product?

Most Shopify stores fail on all three. They use manufacturer copy (not unique, not keyword-optimized), keep descriptions under 50 words (thin content), or use generic templates that read identically across products.

The Anatomy of a High-Ranking Product Description

A description that ranks well follows this structure:

1. Lead with the primary benefit (first sentence) Don’t start with features. Start with what the product does for the customer.

❌ “This is a stainless steel water bottle with a 32oz capacity.” ✓ “Stay hydrated all day with our 32oz stainless steel water bottle — keeps drinks cold for 24 hours, hot for 12.”

2. Include the primary keyword naturally (first 50 words) Google weights the beginning of content more heavily. Get your main keyword in early.

3. Describe key features as benefits (body) Use a short list format:

  • Material/construction → why it matters
  • Size/dimensions → who it fits / what it fits in
  • Use case → when/where to use it

4. Address the buyer’s concern (close) What’s the biggest objection? Address it directly. “Machine washable” for clothing. “Food-grade materials” for kitchenware. “30-day returns” for apparel.

Optimal Length by Product Type

Product typeRecommended lengthReasoning
Simple commodities (bulk supplies)100–150 wordsLow differentiation needed
Standard consumer goods150–250 wordsBalance of information and scroll
High-consideration items ($100+)250–400 wordsBuyers need more justification
Complex/technical products300–500 wordsFeature-heavy products need explanation

Keyword Research for Product Descriptions

You don’t need a sophisticated keyword tool for product descriptions. Start with this:

Step 1: Type your product into Google. Look at the autocomplete suggestions. Those are real buyer searches.

Step 2: Scroll to the bottom of the results page. Look at “People also search for.” More keyword ideas.

Step 3: Check your own Google Search Console. What queries is your product page already showing up for? Optimize toward the ones with impressions but no clicks.

Primary keyword: Use it in the first 50 words, once in the middle, and in the meta title. Secondary keywords: Use them naturally throughout. Don’t force them.

Duplicate Content — The #1 Product SEO Mistake

If 200 other Shopify stores are selling the same product using the same supplier description, Google has no reason to rank yours. This is the duplicate content problem.

Every product description must be unique. Not just slightly reworded — genuinely different copy.

For stores with 100+ products, writing unique descriptions manually is unrealistic. That’s what EcomWave solves — it generates unique, SEO-optimized descriptions for each product based on your specific product data.
